Annette Gordon-Reed was the recipient of an honorary degree at this the College's 2010 commencement ceremony. From 2005 to 2008, she served on the Council of William & Mary's Omohundro Institute for Early American History and Culture. Educated at Harvard Law School, she served as counsel to the New York City Board of Corrections and went on to become a professor of history at Rutgers and a professor of law at New York Law School. She is most widely recognized for her extensive work as a presidential historian and scholar in her 1997 work Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy. Among other awards for her work, Gordon-Reed received Pulitzer Prize in history in 2009 for her book The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family.
