Carl R. Dolmetsch was a professor of English at William & Mary starting in 1959, and chair of the Department of English from 1970-1976. His published work includes The Smart Set: A History and Anthology (NY: Dial Press, 1966) and Our Famous Guest: Mark Twain in Vienna (Athens: University of Georgia Press, 1992). Dolmetsch spent many summers abroad giving lectures and leading seminars on behalf of the United States Information Agency. In the mid-Sixties, he went to the Free University in West Berlin on a Fulbright grant.
