"Dear colleagues:
With deep sadness, I write to inform you of the death on Friday, April 22, 2011, of Floyd E. (Sam) Whitaker, former University Comptroller of the College of William & Mary.
Mr. Whitaker came to the College in 1959 as Assistant Treasurer and Internal Auditor, after serving the Commonwealth of Virginia for four years on the staff of the Auditor of Public Accounts. During his tenure at the College, Mr. Whitaker served in capacities of increasing responsibility, becoming Treasurer in 1969, then University Comptroller from 1981 to his retirement in 1987. Overall, Mr. Whitaker provided the Commonwealth with a total of thirty-two years of dedicated service.
During his twenty-eight years at William & Mary, Mr. Whitaker was respected by his peers in Virginia and among College staff for his leadership in developing sound financial procedures and practices for the College. His dedication, perseverance, conscientiousness and integrity preserved and enhanced William & Mary's reputation for sound fiscal management, which was recognized by the Commonwealth in 1987 when the College was one of only three Commonwealth colleges and universities to meet the Governor's newly promulgated financial management standards.
Sam Whitaker was born in Maysville, Kentucky and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was an active member of the Williamsburg United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Club. He was a former member of the James City County Planning Commission and served on the board of the Williamsburg Regional Library. Sam is survived by his wife, Frances; his daughter, Peggy Whitaker-Manger; grandchildren Melissa and Katie; and great-grandchildren, Tiante and Jaikobie.
The family will receive friends tonight, April 25, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 26, at 11:00 a.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Williamsburg Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Kiwanis Foundation, P.O. Box 1265, Williamsburg, VA 23187, or to the Williamsburg United Methodist Church Building Fund, 500 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185. Online condolences may be offered at www.nelsoncares.com."
