Jeffrey B. Trammell was elected as Rector of William & Mary's Board of Visitors from 2011-2013, serving as the first openly gay board chair of a major university in the United States. Trammell attended William & Mary on a basketball scholarship, graduating in 1973 with a B.A. in history.
During his time at William & Mary, Trammell was captain of the basketball team and named all-conference in 1972, while also serving as president of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Following his time at William & Mary, Jeffrey Trammell earned his law degree from Florida State University in 1977. Since then he has held a number of positions, including Senior Vice President and Legal Counsel for Hill & Knowlton (1988-2000), legislative assistant to Congressman Paul Rogers, administrative assistant to Congressman Edward Stack, founder of Almanac Publishing, and owner of Trammell and Company. A great supporter of the gay and lesbian community, Trammell has served on numerous boards to promote equal rights, including the Human Rights Campaign, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and served as the National Chair of Business Outreach for the Gore presidential campaign in 2000.
In 2013, Trammell married his longtime partner, Stuart Serkin, in a ceremony officiated by former William & Mary chancellor and U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O'Connor. Throughout this time, Trammell remained actively involved in the College of William & Mary. Not only did he serve as Rector, but as board member of the Greater Washington, D.C. chapter of the William & Mary Alumni Association and the founding chair and board member of the Thomas Jefferson Public Policy Program.
