John E. Selby was a William & Mary faculty member in the Department of History. His appointments: Lecturer, 1963-1966; Associate Professor, 1966-1970; Professor, 1970-1987; William E. Pullen Professor of History, 1987-1999; William E. Pullen Professor of History, Emeritus, 1999-2001; Acting Dean of Graduate Studies, 1968-1970; Graduate Dean of Arts and Sciences, 1971-1981; Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, 1986-1987. Selby also served as assistant director of research at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and for many years as book review editor of the William & Mary Quarterly. Selby was well-known for his book The Revolution in Virginia, 1775-1783 (Charlottesville, 1988). He was awarded the Thomas Jefferson Award in 1989.
