Thomas Sherlock served as the chancellor of William & Mary from 1741 until 1761. During his life, he also served as the master of Saint Catharine's College at Cambridge (1714-1719), the Bishop of Bangor (1728-1734), the Bishop of Salisbury (1734-1748) and the Bishop of London (1748-1761).

Sherlock is also know for his writings. These include: The Use and Interest of Prophecy in the Several Ages of the World (1725), The Tryal of the Witnesses of the Resurrection of Jesus (1729) and Pastoral Letter (1750).
