Earl Warren was the former Attorney General of California, California Governor, and the 1948 GOP vice presidential nominee before being named Chief Justice of the United States by President Eisenhower. He served from 1954-1969 and led the Court through several landmark cases, including Brown v Board, Loving v Virginia, Griswold v Connecticut, Miranda v Arizona, and Reynolds v Sims.
Chief Justice Warren visited William & Mary in September 1954 to participate in the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of John Marshall.
