John Robinson

John Robinson served as Chancellor of William & Mary from 1714 to 1721, during which he was Bishop of London. He represented both a religious and political figure in 18th century England. 

Robinson oversaw filling a faculty position for the chair in natural philosophy and mathematics and recruited Reverend Hugh Jones, educated at the University of Oxford. Robinson’s hiring of Jones contributed to Jones’s The Present State of Virginia, published in 1724, that provides one of the most holistic reports from the early days of the College.
