Thomas Ballard

For the William & Mary site, a tract of 330 acres was purchased for £170 from Captain Thomas Ballard on December 20, 1693. Ballard has no other direct connection to William & Mary. The College's boundary stones marked those lands.

A decision (copy), 1720, of the Court of James City County, regarding land owned by George Barker; a deed (copy), 1674, of Thomas Ludwell to Thomas Ballard for 330 acres in James City County (witnessed by Robert Beverley, William Cole, Francis Kirkman, and Otho Thorpe).
  • Lee Family Papers, 1638-1867. Section 156. Call Number: Mss1 L51 f 653-656. Contains notes, n.d., concerning land in James City County, Va., given to the College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Va., by the Virginia General Assembly; orders (copy made by Thomas Ballard and recorded by Robert Hubbard), 1652, of the commissioners (i.e., Richard Bennett, William Claiborne, and Edmund Curtis) appointed by the Protectorate for the reduction of Virginia; and a commission (incomplete), 1715, given by George I, King of Great Britain, to the Earl of Orkney to continue serving as Governor of Virginia.
